‘OUT’ DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS

I.                   PENGANTAR

Dalam bahasa Inggris, terdapat berbagai macam jenis kata kerja berdasarkan jumlah kata yang menyusunnya. Kata kerja biasa kita temui sebagai kata kerja dari satu kata saja seperti go, eat, write, stay, take, dll dan dapat juga dengan komposisi lebih dari satu kata seperti go out, eat out, write down, stay up, dan take off. Kata seperti out, down, up, dan off  dalam contoh itu merupakan partikel independent yang sebenarnya mempunyai makna sendiri yang terkadang dalam penggunaanya bisa berfungsi sebagai preposisi atau malah seperti adverb. Selain contoh tersebut, masih terdapat lebih banyak lagi yang merupakan partikel dalam bahasa Inggris. Namun dalam makalah ini hanya dibahas mengenai OUT yaitu pola-pola dalam kalimat beserta makna yang dibawanya.

OUT merupakan salah satu partikel yang sering digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris. Dapat dikatakan cukup produktif karena partikel itu digunakan sebagi salah satu elemen pembentukan frasa dan kata majemuk. OUT dalam kamus Oxford mempunyai makna jauh atau keluar dari suatu ruang. Sehingga jika OUT dikombinasikan digunakan dan dikombinasikan dengan kata kerja bergerak bisa jadi partikel itu mengekspresikan pergerakan keluar. Jika melihat dari fungsi penggunaannya dalam kalimat OUT  bisa berfungsi sebagai partikel verbal atau preposisi. Jika digabungkan dengan kata kerja seperti pada ‘Take the rubbish out’ out disini sebagai partikel verbal atau jika out digabungkan dengan of seperti pada ‘They rushed out of the house’ maka out berfungsi sebagai preposisi.

Penulis menggunakan data korpus COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English). COCA terdiri dari 450 juta kata dan terdiri lebih dari 160 ribu kalimat dengan lima genre yang berbeda yaitu lisan, fiksi, majalah popular, surat kabar dan jurnal ilmiah. Untuk mendapatkan datanya penulis masuk ke web COCA http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/ lalu mencari data yang mengandung OUT. Setelah mendapatkan semua data yang mengandung OUT , penulis mencari pola-polanya serta mencari maknanya.

II.                PEMBAHASAN

Makalah ini menyajikan contoh-contoh kalimat yang diambil dari Corpus. Berikut adalah contoh kalimat yang diambil dari Corpus dan pola kalimatnya:

1.      Pola 1

                        Makna  1: tidak didalam atau disuatu tempat, ketiadaan

Contoh :

-          I am all the world to you, you are out of your mind.

-          Put a big slash mark through the obstacle that are out of your control entirely.

-          In Ruby, Fixnum math can promote to Bignum when the result is out of Fixnum's range.  

-          The retaliation is out of control in this sport.

2.      Pola 2

Makna 1: perpindahan dari dalam

Contoh:

-          Then, in remembrance of Zion, the tears of grief burst out.

 Makna 2: Sepenuhnya

Contoh:

-          She rubs Pamela’s palm with earth to make the lines stand out.

Makna 3: Muncul

-          It's in the bricollage from all the feedback that the best ideas come out.

3.      Pola 3

Makna 1: Perpindahan dari dalam

Contoh:         

-          I don't know how anyone can believe a thing that comes out of his mouth.

-          If you jump out of an airplane you need a crude parachute more than an accurate altimeter.

-          Not everything that steps out of line, and thus' abnormal', must necessarily be' inferior'.

                 Makna 2 : Ketiadaan

                        Contoh :

-           I had made a flask of tea and some sandwiches but had run out of milk at home, so I brought a stoppered bottle along planning to buy some milk in Keld.

4.      Pola 4

Makna Out: Perpindahan dari dalam

Contoh:

-     Thou shalt not stir a food out of this house, nor the face of a stranger peep within the gates.

-  …by returning to a healthy weight especially if you get the crap foods out of your diet at the same time.

5.      Pola 5

 

Makna 1: bermakna serangan

Contoh:

-Mr. Jewkes blows out the candle.

Makna 2: ke arah luar

Contoh:

-When I looked out my window I was surprised at what I saw.

Makna 3: Berpindah

Contoh:

-..then he cuts out an entire hand-sized chunk of the blind and pokes his face through.

6.      Pola 6

 

Makna: Seluruhnya

Contoh:

-          I am gone out.

7.      Pola 7

Makna 1: Perpindahan dari dalam

-          I just had to get the camera out

Makna 2: Kemunculan

Contoh:

-          We will have it out.    

Makna 3: Seluruhnya

Contoh:

-          I am feeling confident I'll be able to grind it out.

-          It should be a grand day out.

-          It was a no-brainer, I had to check it out.

-          She just needs the patience to bring it out.

8.      Pola 8

Makna : Keluar dari dalam

Contoh:

-          There is only one way out.

9.      Pola 9

        Makna: Keluar dari dalam

      Contoh:

-          I let some air out the tyre and to reduce pressure head on down.

Makna:  Keluar dari  dan Menuju ke

Contoh:

-          …and she admitted that when she asked me out the next week she was nearly certain I would turned her down.

10.  Pola 10

 

Makna: Keberadaan

Contoh:

-          It did make me wonder what I would have done if I was out in the hills.

-          He really believes that women are out there.

11.  Pola 11

 

Makna 1 : Berpindah

     

Contoh:

-          I headed out to Petersfield in the pouring rain

-           

-          …the bow-legged, lanky, determined, or jaunty ways in which we each walk out to the field.

-          I rode out into a field.

-          The Donner brothers and the Reeds set out from Springfield, Illinois, and traveled with the large group of emigrants.

Makna 2: Seluruhnya

Contoh:

-          These regressive Troglodytes can't die out soon enough.

                  Makna 3: Keluar dari dalam

Contoh:

-          Tim spends time writing and brooding in the living room, and occasionally shouts out to us in our beds on Sunday morning.

12.  Pola 12

            

                 Makna : Ketidakadaan

Contoh:

This out of moment thinking has saved the day for me several times.

III.             KESIMPULAN

Berdasarkan analisis data yang diambil dari Corpus diatas dapat disimpulkan bahwa OUT dalam kalimat mempunyai 12 pola dan beberapa makna yaitu :

a.       To be + OUT + of + N 

 Makna: - tidak didalam atau disuatu tempat, ketiadaan

b.      N + V + OUT

Makna :  - perpindahan dari dalam

          -Sepenuhnya

          -Muncul                        

c.       V + OUT + of + N

                                                Makna: - Perpindahan dari dalam

  -Ketiadaan

d.      V+ N + OUT + of + N

Makna: Perpindahan dari dalam

e.       V + OUT + N

     Makna: -Serangan

                  -Kearah luar

                  -Berpindah

f.       to be + Adj + OUT

     Makna  : Seluruhnya
